Visa Requirements for Studying in Canada (Student Visa – Study Permit)

1. Letter of Acceptance

  • A valid acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada is mandatory for applying for a study permit.

2. Proof of Sufficient Funds

  • You must show that you can support yourself during your studies. Generally, you need to prove:
    • Tuition fees for the first year
    • Living expenses for yourself (CAD 10,000/year) and any family members accompanying you (CAD 4,000–5,000 per dependent)
    • Return transportation costs

  • Bank statements for the past 4–6 months
  • Proof of student loan, scholarship, or sponsorship
  • A letter of financial support from family

3. Proof of Identity

  • Valid Passport: It must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Canada.
  • Passport-size Photographs: Recent photographs that meet the Canadian visa photo requirements.

4. Study Permit Application

  • Complete the online application form for the study permit at IRCC’s official website.
  • Pay the application fee of CAD 150.

5. Statement of Purpose (SOP)

  • A letter explaining why you want to study in Canada and how your chosen program aligns with your career goals.

6. Medical Examination

  • You may need to undergo a medical exam from a panel physician approved by the Canadian government, especially if you’re coming from a country with certain health risks.

7. Police Clearance Certificate

  • If required, you must provide a police clearance certificate to prove you have no criminal record.

8. Biometrics

  • After applying, you may be asked to submit your biometrics (fingerprints and photos) at a Visa Application Center (VAC). The biometrics fee is CAD 85.

9. Proof of English/French Language Proficiency

  • While not mandatory for a visa, many universities require proof of language proficiency through tests like:
    • IELTS: A minimum score of 6.5 for undergraduate and 7.0 for postgraduate programs.
    • TOEFL: Minimum score of 90–100.
    • French Tests (for Quebec): Tests like TEF or TCF are needed if you’re applying to a French-speaking university.

10. Visa Processing Time

  • The processing time for a Canadian study permit can range from 3 weeks to several months, depending on your country of residence.

11. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

  • After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, allowing you to work in Canada for up to 3 years.
