Visa Requirements for Studying in South Korea (D-2 Student Visa)

1. Letter of Admission (Acceptance Letter)

  • You must have a Letter of Admission from a recognized South Korean educational institution. Once you’re admitted, the university will issue this document.

2. Visa Application Form

  • Complete the visa application form for the D-2 Student Visa, available through the Korean Immigration Service or your local South Korean embassy.

3. Valid Passport

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in South Korea.

4. Passport-sized Photographs

  • Recent passport-sized photos that meet the South Korean visa photo requirements.

5. Proof of Sufficient Funds

  • You must provide proof that you have enough financial resources to cover your tuition and living expenses during your stay:
    • Tuition Fees: Proof of payment or capability to pay tuition fees.
    • Living Expenses: Minimum of KRW 12,000,000 (~USD 10,000) for one year.

Documents accepted:

  • Bank statements (last 3-6 months)
  • Scholarship or financial aid letters (if applicable)
  • Financial support letters from family members

6. Health Insurance

  • You are required to have health insurance that is valid in South Korea. Many universities provide health insurance options for international students or you can purchase private insurance.

7. Proof of Language Proficiency

  • Some universities may require proof of proficiency in Korean or English depending on the medium of instruction:
    • Korean Language Proficiency (TOPIK): Minimum level 3–4 for undergraduate programs and 4–6 for graduate programs.
    • English Proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL): Minimum score of IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 for English-taught programs.

8. Visa Fee

  • The visa fee varies depending on your nationality but typically ranges from KRW 60,000–90,000 (~USD 50–80).

9. Health Examination (if required)

  • Some students may be required to submit a medical certificate or undergo a health check depending on the country of origin.

10. Certificate of Residency Registration

  • Upon arrival in South Korea, students staying for more than 90 days must apply for an Alien Registration Card (ARC) within 90 days at the local immigration office.

11. Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement

  • South Korea may assess your intention to genuinely study and return to your home country after your studies.

12. Visa Processing Time

  • Processing time for a South Korean student visa typically ranges from 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the embassy and your individual case.

13. Work While Studying

  • With a D-2 visa, international students can work part-time up to 20 hours a week during the semester and unlimited hours during vacations. However, you must obtain permission from the Korean Immigration Office.
