Visa Requirements for Studying in Australia (Student Visa – Subclass 500)

1. Letter of Offer/Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE)

  • You must have a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) from an Australian institution. After being accepted into a course, the institution will provide this document.

2. Proof of Financial Capacity

  • You must show proof that you can support yourself financially during your stay. This includes covering tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs:
    • Tuition fees: As per the university’s requirements.
    • Living expenses: AUD 24,505/year for the student and AUD 7,500/year for a dependent.
    • Travel costs: Proof of ability to cover return travel tickets.

Acceptable financial documents:

  • Bank statements for the last 6 months
  • Proof of student loans, scholarships, or sponsorships
  • Financial support letter from family or guardians

3. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

  • You are required to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your stay in Australia. OSHC provides access to medical services and hospital care.

4. English Language Proficiency

  • Proof of English proficiency through tests such as:
    • IELTS: Minimum score of 6.0 or 6.5, depending on the university and course.
    • TOEFL: Minimum score of 79–90.
    • PTE: Minimum score of 58–64.

Exemptions may apply if you are from an English-speaking country or have completed previous studies in English.

5. Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement

  • You must provide a GTE statement outlining that your primary reason for coming to Australia is to study and that you intend to return to your home country after completing your course. The GTE is a key criterion in your visa application.

6. Passport

  • Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Australia.

7. Health and Character Requirements

  • Health Examination: You may be required to undergo a health check, especially if you’re coming from a country with health risks or applying for longer courses.
  • Character Assessment: You must provide a police clearance certificate or a statement that you have no criminal record.

8. Visa Application Process

  • Apply online: You can apply for your student visa through the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs website.
  • Application Fee: AUD 650 (approximate cost, subject to change).
  • Biometrics: You may be asked to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photos) as part of the application process.

9. Visa Processing Time

  • Visa processing times vary, but most applications are processed within 1 to 3 months. Applying early is recommended.

10. Post-Study Work Visa

  • After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which allows you to stay and work in Australia for 2–4 years, depending on your qualification.
